I’m Finally a Senior!

After three interesting years of high school, I am quickly approaching my final year at a pace I’m not too comfortable with. With being a senior comes a lot of responsibilities and tasks that need to be checked off the to-do list. There are campus tours that need to be done, capstone projects that need to be started, SATs to study for as well as take, applications to send off to colleges, senior dues to pay off, a GPA to keep up, a show choir to lead now that I’ve been appointed captain (I’m super stoked about this), and on top of all that, balance a job on my plate. I will say that trying to write this list down got me breathing a little heavier, but every senior has to go through this. I should be able to do it too.

From the list, I’ve started campus tours. I visited Kennesaw State University a few weeks ago. I didn’t take any pictures, which I currently regret, because I was like a kid in a candy store. The campus is super cool and KSU seemed technologically advanced and offers good programs. In a few days I will be visiting the University of Georgia and I’m quite excited to see what’s in store. Another exciting milestone is that I started working. My first official job! I work as a cashier at a local pizza restaurant and I’ve been loving it. I’m the kind of person who will take working over sitting at home watching TV any day! Plus as a cashier I also take in orders, so it’s been definitely helping me build confidence when speaking to new people and enhancing my customer service skills.

A project that I’ve recently started is starting to take my senior pictures. I still have yet to sign up with a studio to get both my yearbook and cap and gown pictures. When it comes to the scenes my mom and I decided to do our own, ones that catered more to who I am and backgrounds that express the real Allyson. Like everything I do, I like to add a bit of a twist. My mom and I thought it would be a good idea to do some pictures at home since it’s where I live and spent my entire high school life in. We decided to do more of a high fashion shoot for my pictures, so we waited on a rainy day to take some cool shots. What I like about the pictures is that they have a range from almost playful to something a little gothic. I look like one of those chicks from horror movies who’s about to haunt someone (honestly those shots were my personal favorite). The rest of my senior picture scenes are still yet to be taken and ideas are still being brought to the table. Honestly, I think I need a scene surrounded by Disney characters. Those who know me will tell you that Disney movies make up my life. What can I say? I’m still a five year old at heart, despite the fact, I may need to face some responsibilities that require a tad bit of growing up.

I am pretty excited to say that this week will definitely be an eventful, but good week. Today is the two year anniversary since Cardigans and Necklaces was officially created. I’m ready to begin adding a second year worth of content to the blog! Another year of creating pretty outfits sounds pretty great if you ask me!

Another thing I’m pretty siked about is starting a brand new semester of school tomorrow. Last year I had an accelerated pre-calculus block class that I was not very fond of, but this semester I won’t have it any longer! I’m ready to meet new teachers and make new friends in my classes. This semester I will be taking a block physics class and a block Spanish 3. I’m not big on physics since it’s a mix between math and science (not my favorite subjects), but I’m ready to give it my best.

For those of you who don’t personally know me, I am probably the biggest Teen Wolf geek there is around. I mean, who else would binge watch all five seasons of the show in four days or learn all of the ages and heights of the actors in the show? Okay, I may have quite a bit of an addiction for the show going… but I promise you I’m not crazy (that’s a lie, I’m pretty crazy). All I can say is that a girl needs her fix of super attractive mythical creatures with crazy cool butt kicking abilities. Tomorrow season 5b of Teen Wolf starts and let’s just say that I may have cried a few tears of excitement this morning, #FanGirlAlert.

Speaking of my quirkiness, we all have learned from the past that I can be quite the mixaholic. A Mixaholic is a person who loves to mix and match different patterns and colors together quite a lot to the point where loved ones worry for the person’s well being and wonder if they will ever give up this addiction. Well for you loved ones, the answer is a big no, I will forever play around with patterns. The outfit above is a perfect example of my mixaholia (that might not be a word). A floral purple crop top with a grey and blue striped cardigan is quite a pattern mix but it definitely works. Since I’m not big with exposing too much skin, I always try to pair up crop tops with high waisted bottoms (in this case a high waisted blush pink pant). Since I already had so much going on in the top I kept the shoes and pants a light neutral color. The buttons in the pants were a rose gold color so I made sure to tie in rose gold earrings. Other than that, the outfit required little jewelry and looked pretty great. Remember young grasshoppers, sometimes less is more.

Recently for Chorus I had to go to graduation and sing as part of a mandatory assignment. I wasn’t too happy that I had to stay till around nine at night on the last day of school but then it resulted on a shopping trip to get the outfit we had to wear. My chorus teacher asked that we wear either khaki pants and a white shirt or we go with a nice simple white dress. We were aloud to wear any shoes and accessories we wanted so that allowed me to have fun and play with making an outfit. I always hear about how hard the hunt for a perfect white dress can be but I was able to find my dress within one day after looking in two stores that didn’t have the dress for me. Almost my entire outfit came from Rue 21, the shoes came from Marshalls. I was kind of glad that singing at graduation resulted in me getting an absolutely beautiful dress which is also perfect for this amazing upcoming summer.

When you look at this outfit you may not see much bohemian because of the jewelry. The dress alone is sort of Bohemian because of the flower print lace and because of how it flows. It’s loose and free and if I paired it up with a dream catcher necklace or a head band that ran across my forehead you would be able to see the bohemian. Instead of going that route I went with a more glitzy side because I love my shiny things. I went with this necklace because it was long and brought in a lot of attention to the top of the dress and kind of added a surprising element since people wouldn’t really expect to take a dress such as this one in that sort of direction. The earrings match the necklace perfectly but what I love about them is how they look like they are floating and not connected to my ear! The bracelets had to have some white incorporated into them because then it would be too much gold. I did the same thing with adding white to the shoes because it added more attention to the outfit and jewelry rather than the feet and it didn’t over power the outfit with more gold. These shoes were very comfortable for having a small heel on them. I was able to walk around all day without feeling any foot pain! I was able to look glitzy with a dash of bohemian without walking around as if I was a new born horse trying to stand up for the first time.

I know what some of you guys may be thinking, “Hey she’s still alive! She didn’t get wiped off existence!” To further elaborate on that, I am still alive and yes I still exist. I’ll tell you guys what, 10th grade has sure been a step up from 9th and the pressure has been real. I’ve had so much work recently to try and focus on and it’s been difficult to try and create posts while keeping up my grades. I hit my second semester of 10th grade and time is flying by for me. It feels like just yesterday I was planning my outfit for the first day of school! I totally see what adults mean by saying that us teenagers grow up so fast. I even feel as if I’m growing up too fast, I really wish I could stop time and enjoy the now a bit better.
So to start off my first post in a good while I thought there would be no way better than with an Inspiration Monday! I’ve decided to use a picture of rust because I found this picture while doing some chemistry homework (we’re learning about chemical properties, such as oxidation). I thought the picture had this cool texture to it and I thought it would be fun to play around with metallic colors some more. Some of my favorite pieces would have to be the sneakers because they look absolutely stylish and you can style it in so many different ways! I also love the purse because of how well the texture of it matches the picture given.
Hopefully I will be able to start getting more posts in now that I don’t have an essay due a week because of my lit class, but I’m not complaining. I will confess to that class being my favorite class I’ve ever had and my lit teacher being the best teacher I ever had.

Teen Fashion: BETA Induction: Beautiful, Elegant, Tasteful, and Authentic Outift

teen fashion blog beta club ootd

So I know it’s been a while but… I GOT INTO THE BETA CLUB!!!. When I first got the letter I was way excited and humbled because only a selected few get chosen. I wasn’t exactly sure what it was (I know, what rock do I live under), but I’ve always heard about how great it is for college applications so I knew this was going to be a great opportunity for me. I read the long and somewhat boring letter to find out more about the club but the gist of it is that it is an educational youth organization that encourages academic achievement, character, leadership, and service so it requires students to do work around the community. You earn points based on the service you do and for how long you do it. I was pumped when I heard about this because I’ve wanted to do community service for a while now but I’ve never seemed to get around to it. The best part is that I’m doing community service with some of my other friends so we get to be able to share these experiences with each other. They give you a certain amount of points that you must withhold in order to stay in the club as well as keeping up a 3.5 average or higher.  When you sign up for BETA, you are given the option to attend the induction. At the BETA induction they talk about what you do in the club, a bit about its history, who are the officers, we pledged to stay pure (ok, that is not what we pledged), and induct new members into the club (I know, it sounds like a huge snooze fest). We had a dress code to go by, which they basically described to us as:  “dress as you would if your grandmother was going to church”. To them that meant no jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes, and any other informal wear of the sort. Wouldn’t have been easier to just say casual elegant?

Before the induction ceremony started my mom and I went through the halls of the school and took some pictures of the outfit. I also caught up with a few of my friends that I had not talked to since school started because we no longer have classes together. There were over 170 new sophomores being inducted that night and it was a long process. Trying to line up 170 chatty teenagers in alphabetical order was difficult and no one seemed to want to pay attention to the poor teacher who kept yelling over us to get our attention. I will say that he was not the man for the job, most of the students were taller than him and to top it all of he was sick, so yelling was difficult for him. They should have had some of the cheerleaders bring out their megaphones and allow the man to use it. The induction process was longer than I expected and it got sort of boring, then finally they started pinning kids and giving out certificates. Of course as the socially awkward person I am I went out there walking as if I was the tin man from the Wizard of Oz and needed oil in my joints. I thought I did completely fine just walking and smiling, in fact in my head the walk went down as if I was walking a catwalk or something… and then I saw my mom’s pictures. I wasn’t really smiling, and my walking was stiff and all over the place! But what can I say, at least my outfit looked good and took some attention away from my actions or at least I hope it did.

What I wore was a navy blue dress that had an open back which was covered with lace. I also wore a pearl necklace that had different subtle colors such as a pearl white, light grey, and a soft gold. The bracelet was pearl white as well as my earrings. My shoes were a nude color and brown to go along with the necklace. I made sure to keep the outfit more on the simple side because it was a semi formal event and I didn’t want to wear a color that wasn’t appropriate for the setting. The dress was very comfortable, especially since we were there for more than two hours. I started looking around at what some of the other girls were wearing and I saw a lot of the same things. I saw a lot of maxi and skater dresses paired up with long over sized cover ups. I also saw a lot of girls wearing sandals, I understand it’s still hot outside but this is a semi formal event people! I don’t know about you but when I think semi formal, sandals are definitely not the first thing that comes to mind. Yep! I’m up to a good start this year.

FFF: Fab Fifty Friday

The post today it’s an accurate representation of how intense my week was. This is only the second week of school and I have been going to bed past 11 PM every day and that’s just homework for God’s sakes! Going back to school can take a toll on your overall emotional wellness. It is not only the stress of classes and grades and fitting in, but it also means having to deal with people, the good, the bad, and the in between (the ones that just don’t care).

I understand not everybody will have my same opinions and I respect that, however that won’t stop me from dissecting other’s opinions (at least in my head). The other day at lunch, I overheard a group at the table talking about the Ebola outbreak in Africa and the two Americans that were brought back to Atlanta for medical care. I guess that because we live so close to Atlanta it was a very passionate discussion. The consensus pretty much was that the government did wrong and that they shouldn’t have brought them back to the US and risk an outbreak at home.

I couldn’t help but cringe as I heard them talk. I do realize that there is politics behind the whole decision and that it is probably more complicated than what I can even begin to imagine or understand, but in my opinion it was the right thing to do. Call me naive or stupid but to me it is an expression of moral and humanity at it’s best. That doesn’t mean I am not afraid, we all are but these kids are so consumed by their own fears that they would rather abandon people than provide a helping hand. Now, if that is not losing humanity what is? I got emotional, they were discussing the lives of two people, not lab monkeys (although that is pretty bad too). These two inconveniences and takers of their good night sleep are our citizens, our missionaries. They represent the goodwill of our nation and they represent each and every one of us. They stand up for causes that we are too scared or inconvenienced to take on. We should be grateful to them, they do the work that nobody else wants or cares to do. They are heroes! Oh, but it is so easy to criticize others. It is so easy these days to not feel empathy for others. Why!!!??? What went wrong? When as a society did we lose it? When did it start? I know it is probably a combination of my personality and my parents teachings but I feel for them, I feel for their families. I asked myself as I continued to listen to their ramblings: “I wonder if they would say the same thing if it was one of their parents/siblings/grandparents?” I felt defeated. These people are the future of this nation! What is next? No army because they are too selfish to care for anybody else?

I hope that something good comes out of this. I really do. Think about it. How long has this virus been around? How many people has it killed? Who cares, right? It was poor African people, it was not us. As we bring these two Americans home we are confronted with the realization that we have to do something. It’s not a third world country anymore, it’s us! There is money for research now, companies are willing to work on a cure now… the irony. Too poor to be saved. I apologize if we don’t share the same opinions, please know that I do respect yours and that in no way I am trying to offend anybody that differs from mine. I am so glad I got that out of my chest!

I can’t deny my mood has been somber since that conversation, so writing this post is my way of releasing those emotions to start working on my positivity again. The outfit represents my view (at least this week) of the future. A bleak, black and white one, no colors, not even gray. Good vs evil. In or out. The FAIL cap was the piece that brought everything together. We FAILED! Forget about the latest dystopic novels, in our future, there is no more humanity among or within us.

Teen Fashion: First Impressions: Open House Outfit

Every year when I go to Open House I always make sure to dress up. Just like when going to an interview for a job, you make sure to look good because it’s all about first impressions. I like my teachers to think that I am well put together and organized because that is what they are going to think of me when I walk into school on the first day. I enjoy getting ready for something since the whole summer I stayed in shorts and a t-shirt most of the time. What I like most about the outfit is the pastel colors paired up with the darker colors. I love the light pink and gold color and how it contrasted so well with each other. I also loved the long striped cardigan over the outfit, it added visual interest.

How do you guys like my hair? I cut it a few weeks back, but it’s a lot shorter now. I have to admit I get frustrated sometimes when trying to style it, but it looks good in the end. It feels so good not having to manage so much hair. 🙂 Besides a change now and then is not bad. What do you think?

Back to School Geek Style: Doctor Who

Today I’ve decided to write a post for the geek and nerd in some of us. The first thing I want to talk about is the word fandoms. If you’re a nerd like me, you belong in some sort of fandom (or many fandoms). To belong to a fandom means you have to be a hardcore fan, you love something so much you freak out. This freak out is common among girls, it’s called fangirling. The first time I heard fangirling was when this girl in my class was telling me how she fangirls about One Direction and started freaking out and lecturing me about each of the boys. I’m not a One Directioner so I didn’t see what the big hype was about and I thought fangirling was pretty stupid. Then it hit me! Shows such as Doctor Who and The Walking Dead knocked at my door. Books like The Hunger Games and The Fault in our Stars started breaking down my windows! I had come down with the fangirling disease . Once you become a fangirl you can never go back, you become part of a fandom and there is no escaping. I became a fangirl a long time ago and I belong to more fandoms than all of my fingers and toes put together. Some of the main fandoms I belong to are: The Walking Dead, Doctor Who, Reign, Hunger Games, Disney, and The Fault in our Stars.

The fandom I’m going to talk about today is Doctor Who. This is one of my main fandoms where I shriek at the mention of The Doctor. I’m pretty lucky to have my whovian friends because I would not be able to rant about each individual show to people who don’t watch the show. Today I started looking for when season 8 of Doctor Who is coming out, and sure enough it’s coming out August 23 on the BBC channel. I have no words to describe how excited I was when I read about how soon season 8 is. I’m excited to see how the 12th doctor (played by Peter Capaldi) is going to do. Clara remains the companion for this season. Also I heard of rumors about the Doctor’s worse enemy, the Master, making a comeback in this season.

Doctor Who is a really famous British show on the BBC Channel. If you like Doctor Who then you also might be interested in the show Sherlock and Supernatural. If you’re someone who loves these shows, then you belong to the superwholock fandom. Doctor Who is actually an alien. He mentions often in the show that he has two hearts. He is the last surviving Time Lord from Gallifrey. Gallifrey and all other time lords were destroyed in the Great Time war against the Daleks. Daleks are another one of the doctor’s main enemies, and their mission is to take over the universe and exterminate the doctor. Some other aliens that come up a lot are the Cyberman, Sontarans, and scariest of all the Weeping Angels. All of the shows the Weeping Angels come up in have me at the edge of my seat but they are indeed my favorite alien. The only way to make sure you don’t get caught by a Weeping Angel is by looking at it the whole time and no blinking. If you blink the angel takes its true form and attacks you. The way it kills you is by sending you back in time and has you live your life to death. To me that’s the best death someone could go through because you still get to live your full life, just in a different time period. If I was caught by a weeping angel, I would want to be sent back to the Renaissance time period because that sounded like a really fun and interesting time period. There were so many geniuses of music, art, and literature in this time period. On the way to my school we pass a cemetery that has a few angel statues. Every time my bus passes by the cemetery I turn to my friend and whisper don’t blink in her ear. My friend nearly had a heart attack the first few times I did it. 🙂

The Doctor often gathers companions to travel with him in the Tardis (phone booth) and to help him keep balance in all the universe. My favorite companions have been Amy and Rory so far because they go along with the doctor really well. Plus Amy and Rory were the cutest couple ever! I hear about how Disney gives girls an untrue picture of men, but Rory is just amazing! Pretty sure Doctor Who has Disney beat!

Above I have a bunch of Doctor Who merchandise that will bring out your inner geek when going back to school. The reason I chose these certain items is because they are stylish and great pieces that you can do a lot with. The key with these things is moderation! Wear one item at a time because wearing all Doctor Who items won’t look all that good. I made sure to include all sort of things that anybody needs when going back to school. There are clothes, jewelry, pens/pencils, cases, book bags, and water bottles. I will admit I saw these different items and died a little inside.

Now that you all know what the fangirling is and what fandoms are, I want you think of what geeky fandoms you may be involved in. Make sure to leave comments about any fandoms you may be in. I would love to find out what type of fandoms you are all involved in. Maybe I’m in them as well.

Tantalizing Twenties: Thoroughly Modern Millie Flapper Costume

As I have mentioned before in previous posts and in my about section, I’m in chorus. We do a lot of different concerts throughout the year and they are always super fun to do. The concert I enjoyed the most was our end of the year concert which we turned into an award show to honor seniors before they left. The award show we were trying to recreate in the auditorium was the Tony awards, but we named it the Rhoades awards after my chorus teacher. The Tony awards is an award show were they give awards based on Broadway performances. Each chorus class was given a different musical and it equaled a grand show over all. All of the chorus classes got assigned the song Anything Goes from the Broadway show Anything Goes as the opening and the ending. I’m in the beginners group and we were assigned to perform songs from the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie. For three months we practiced the song and the dance so we would look amazing on stage. The practices were so much fun and I enjoyed getting to dance and sing because I love doing both. The women’s chorus class were assigned Mama Mia, men’s chorus was assigned Newsies, mixed was assigned The Lion King, show choir was assigned American Idiot, and the capella group was assigned songs from West Side Story.

DSC_1844 1

DSC_1862 1

I thought show choir had the best performance because of how a lot of the members had great facial expressions, amazing voices, and lots of enthusiasm when they were singing. Plus I like a few Green Day songs that they sang so it was really entertaining to watch. All of the chorus groups did amazing and I enjoyed standing back stage and attending practices so I could sing along. Something you may not know about me is that I’m a huge musical girl. I enjoy being able to watch a movie and then all of a sudden hear a song with good lyrics and music to go with it. In my previous posts I mentioned how my favorite musical was Les Miserables, I was really upset when I found out that the year before I became a freshmen they did Les Mis and that I missed my opportunity in being able to perform in such an amazing musical. I dream of being able to sing One Day More along with other amazing voices, the layering of the voices would sound amazing.

To perform Thoroughly Modern Millie we were told to dress up as flappers because Thoroughly Modern Millie takes place in 1922. My mom and I spent a couple nights looking for flapper dresses that were either purple, silver, black, white, or blue. I found this black flapper dress on Amazon and it looked amazing! I may have had a flapper dress on but I still didn’t look like I came from the 1920’s. To get a more vintage look I added long pearls, long black gloves, and a very sparkly head band with lots of sparkle. The headpiece we did ourselves! The outfit looked great and it was comfortable to perform in. One of the things I was stressing about was having a wardrobe malfunction but everything turned out great. I did my best and I didn’t break any legs.

Teen Fashion: Cool and Warm Enough

Cool and warm enough 1

Cool and Warm Enough 2

Cool and Warm Enough 3

Spring Break is now over and we went back to school Monday. I hated having to wake up early because I got used to sleeping in till noon. It was kind of funny walking into school Monday because I would look around and find people with really bad tans or people who got sun burned. Plus everyone was walking around as if they were the living dead because they were so tired. All this week we have been going full throttle in our classes  now that our EOCTs (End of Course Test) are coming up. The teachers have been so stressed out with trying to get everything covered which sucks for the students because these are the times we get double the homework. But summer is just around the corner and I’m super excited for the break but after a few days I start to miss my friends and my classmates.

This outfit was taken during spring break in Madison, GA.  The city was such a beautiful place and there were flowers everywhere which I loved. I will be talking about the city and a few things we did while we were there in one of my upcoming posts so you guys can get a feel for it. It was such a cool place and I definitely would recommend for people to take a nice trip there.

Spring break was kind of cold for us down here in Georgia so I had to wear a long sleeve shirt and pants to go to Madison. I wore a white tank top with a long black and gray striped cardigan over it. I also pared it with a white, black, and gray beaded necklace. I also added dark purple pants to the outfit to give it an unexpected color. The shoes matched the gray in the top of the shirt. The outfit was perfect to go walking in because when it was cold I had the cover up and once it got warmer I could just take off the cover up and just wear the tank top and the outfit would still look nice. Once I got home I had to do some serious washing because the pollen got all over my clothes, the shoes looked yellow instead of gray by the time we were done walking.
